Normally when we shoot a project, it’s after months and months of preparation. It takes a lot of time to write them, edit them, re-write them, cast them and complete pre-production. So it was a bit of a shock when I decided to write Mercury in October that we’d be filming it in December. It was a quick turnaround for me. But it was a story I’ve been sitting on for some time and one that I felt compelled to tell at this particular point in time.

Mercury takes place over the span of 20+ years, and yes, it is again based on a personal experience. A very intense one for me for a ton of different reasons. 2023 marked the 30th anniversary of Aaron, Dan and Bob (the friends depicted in Mercury) coming into my life. But more than marking an anniversary, it’s a story that is incredibly near and dear to my heart and one that I am immensely proud of.

This short film is really only the beginning of that story though. Our plan is to turn this into our first feature film and then everyone will get to see how this remarkable story unfolded over the span of 27 years against a backdrop of trauma, uncertainty and bonds that just wouldn’t seem to break, no matter how hard we tried.

Mercury is based on a memoir that I wrote called The Pine Barons. That memoir is unpublished at this point because of some legal reasons, but my hope will always be that I get to tell my entire story some day soon! We won’t be able to do that without some help though, so time will tell.

For now, enjoy some behind-the-scenes pics from the set of Mercury! Mercury is coming soon!
